Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA)
“A Certifying Acceptance Agent is a person who, pursuant to a written agreement with the IRS, is authorized to assist individuals and other foreign persons who do not qualify for a Social Security Number but who still need a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) . The Certifying Acceptance Agent facilitates the application process by reviewing the necessary documents and forwarding the completed forms to IRS.”
Basically this means that by visiting a Certifying Acceptance Agent, the Agent will review or prepare an applicants’ W-7 application and identifying documentation, complete a certificate of accuracy (COA), and forward the certificate and application to the IRS for processing. Without the assistance of an Acceptance Agent, the original identification documents (usually a passport) must be mailed to IRS; which would mean this document would be in transit for 6 to 10 weeks on top of the processing period.
We strongly recommend that you do not mail your original passport to the IRS, thus exposing yourself to potential loss of this document or worse. Be aware that the IRS has changed the requirements for Certifying Acceptance Agents. Certifying Acceptance Agents are now required to undertake a “Fraudulent Document Recognition Training” course. Our office is fully compliant with these new requirements. We have significant experience preparing documents for the purpose of ITIN applications. We would be pleased to help you!
